G-Tek tips
Here are a few tips on using G-Tek. Some of them may seem pretty obvious but we have found that they are necessary:
  • First of all, G-Tek products are top-water lures, the lip faces up.
  • Before you put your G-Tek in the water, slow the boat way down.
  • Put your G-Tek into the water off the side of the boat (less turbulence).
  • If you are using more than one G-Tek, run them fairly close together, this enlarges the size of the school and brings fish up from deep water.
  • Once you hook a fish, the G-Teks not engaged by fish can stay out, as long as they are not interfering with one another. They float and will keep the school with the boat.
  • Leadering a fish on a G-Tek is similar to a traditional spreader bar. Have the leaderman hand the G-Tek back to another member of the crew to get it out of the way. The mainline leader is 250 lb. test.
  • The way we use the G-Tek System is to run the G-1 down the middle with G-2s or G-3s slightly behind and off to the side. This simulates a large school of bait.
  • If you wish to broaden the range in which you can run the G-tek when conditions become sloppy and windy place torpedo weights inside the squid on the outside corners (ziptie or floss the bottom of the squid to keep the lead in the squid -shell squid only). If your G-tek is not rigged with hollow bodies we recommend that you remove two baits on the outside corners and replace with weights. This will help keep the G-Tek from becoming airborne.
  • On the smaller G-tek (G3), use a chase bait of your choice, either straggler or predator, referenced below- run it several feet or more behind the last squid.
Straggler versus Predator
The G3 comes rigged with a 300lb. test snap swivel so you can attach your choice of chase bait. There are two schools of thought on chase baits. Straggler versus predator, both are effective.

The straggler approach takes the same bait that is rigged on the bar and separates it from the pack.

The predator uses bait that imitates a small predator chasing the school. For example, a small dolphin, bonita, skip jack, or a larger squid. It should be slightly larger and different in color.

I cannot say that one is better than the other. As far as a personal preference, I like the predator option because I believe it may trigger a feeding response from a fish that otherwise may not be interested (competition).

Thanks again and always be safe!
